Old Hall

Old Hall

Reputed to be the oldest Hotel in England

The building dates back to 1573. The New Hall as it was once known was built by the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury; the Countess being the redoubtable ‘Bess of Hardwick’ who built Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth.

The children from her first marriage to Sir William Cavendish created the line of the Dukes of Devonshire whose generations have lived at Chatsworth House until the present day. It was with Bess’ third husband, George Talbot, the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury that they built the New Hall in Buxton, on the foundations of an earlier Inn or Hostelry known as the Auld Hall.

The New Hall was built with the sanction of Queen Elizabeth First, to provide accommodation for Mary Queen of Scots who was under house arrest in the keeper-ship of the Shrewsbury’s.

Its position in the heart of Buxton means that visitors can also explore a year-round programme of activities within the town and the Peak District.

Thermal Waters that attracted the Romans

Buxton’s long, yet intermittent, history as a spa resort began when Roman conquerors discovered warm bubbling springs right underneath what is today the Buxton Crescent, the town’s leading spa break destination. As a result, this spa town has been a focus of aristocratic patronage and health pilgrimage for much of its 2,000-year history.

  • Mary Queen of Scots came to ‘take the water cure’ to treat her rheumatism.
  • One of England’s richest men, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, commissioned The Crescent, an exquisite example of Georgian architecture.
  • Today’s extensive restoration puts the town back on the heritage spa trail.
  • The thermal waters are now integral to an extensive, holistic spa and wellness programme for visitors.
