Smrdáky's intensely smelling water has been used for therapeutic purposes since 1740. Because the extremely high sulphur content makes the mineral water and the healing mud that results from the flow of the water through a loess soil very effective. This was also recognized by Jozef Vietoris, who in 1833 founded the historic spa with the beautiful surrounding park, which achieved great success, especially in the treatment of skin diseases, and was soon considered the "Dead Sea" of Slovakia.
